Senior Citizens

In 2011 Eye Music began a new development working with Senior Citizens, particularly those with Dementia and Frailty. Funded by the City Bridge Trust, this consists of additions to our SEN computer-music sensor system, and the creation of a new system of sails by Colourscape artists Peter Jones & Lynne Dickens, called "Through the Looking Glass". This is designed to be assembled quickly in small spaces, to create a more intimate Colourscape-like environment.

The sensor system is perfectly adapted to providing elderly people, who may have limited movement, the opportunities to create their own music. You can see some of the results in the videos at the bottom of this page. And click here for comments from Care Homes where we have run workshops.

Here is a short video showing one of our pilot weeks with residents at Ruben's House in North London.

During the week the day was split into music making workshops using movement sensors with video feedback, and sensory experiences, with the sensors controlling additional music patterns and the lights. At the end of the week there was a short performance for other residents.

As with all of the Eye Music educational projects our Senior Citizens projects end with performances by the participants. For most Care Homes this is the first time that the residents have given their own public performances.

Our new Sensory Colour Space is perfect for those with Dementia who respond strongly to the beneficial colour, light and music that they control themselves, giving ownership and beneficial awareness.

David Wood loves music, but has never learned to play an instrument. The sensor instruments allow him to overcome physical limitations and begin to express himself in ways that weren't available to him previously. He very quickly worked out how to play the new system and had several highly enjoyable sessions during a recent workshop at Alexandra Nursing Home in Rotherham. You can clearly see the enabling nature of this technology.

His hand movements over the sensors are controlling the pitch of the sounds, and the intensity of the lights.

You can also see the new sails designed by Colourscape artists Peter Jones & Lynne Dickens.
